How to get Published?!?

With this manuscript of mine and a vow to sell it next year come hell or high tide, I wonder what are the best ways to pursue this goal. I've been told to definitely post chapters online and to definitely not post them online; some say get an agent first, but others advise going straight to the publishers and getting an agent only after the manuscript is sold. With this month set aside for strategies just how I'm going to get this sucker bought, I'm asking anyone reading this to offer any tips that might have worked for you or an author you know. Anything is helpful, I'm an ignorant cuss when it comes to stuff like this.

Speaking from my own vast reservoir of inexperience, I would like to suggest that you find the names of several high-profile agents specializing in your category, send them flowers and candies, and then stalk them relentlessly until they agree to represent you. A gun-point encounter may be required.

I have read a lot about this and am going to approach an agent. I also removed snippets of my work after published authors advised me to wait until I have a contract. They said then share it on a website named after the book.I have my author blog and they help me there. Hope it helps.

Thanks, Glynis! I've avoided posting anything from the book this far, what harm a few more months? I hadn't heard of creating a site named after the book, that's an excellent idea.

All the agents I have talked to want the author the do all the footwork anyway, blog, press releases, networking, honestly I don't know what they do to get their 10%. Make a blog or website for the book before you contact agents or publishing houses. Have you considered self publishing? A lot of big time publishing houses are now signing authors who have self published and sold books. For first time authors it is becoming the best way to go.

Thanks for the helpful tips, Jen! I'm getting the impression that a website is compulsory at this stage and plan to get cracking right away.

I have found that getting either a publisher or an agent is exceedingly difficult. You have to wait months to hear from any one person and no one takes simultaneous submissions--so just submitting your book a few places can take years! I'm too old to wait for that and as I'm retired, I'm going it alone because I have the time to publish and promote my book myself. Good luck to you whatever route you take!
